Project goals

build a 1,000-bird broiler house on my family plot in Mmopane, buy feeders, drinkers, gas brooders and a plucking machine, install a 5,000 litre water tank with piping, and buy my first cycle of 1,000 day-old chicks with feed and vaccines

Implementation strategy

First two months: build the broiler house and install the water tank and equipment, then pass the veterinary inspection. Month three: place the first 1,000 day-old chicks and grow them over six weeks. From month four: sell the first cycle to the butcheries and start the next cycle immediately, running about seven cycles per year

Expected outcomes

Once the project is running I expect to sell about 950 birds per cycle at around P75 each, supply three butcheries and the tuck shops consistently, earn a steady income for my family, and create one full-time job for a poultry attendant from Mmopane, growing to two jobs by the second year

Growth plan

To grow, I want to move from 1,000 to 2,000 birds per cycle by year two by adding a second broiler house, add egg layers for a steady weekly income alongside the broiler cycles, and supply butcheries in Metsimotlhabe and Gabane as production grows.

Risks

• disease outbreaks like Newcastle disease wiping out a cycle
• feed price increases squeezing my margin
• heat stress killing birds in summer

Local impact

The business will create one full-time job at the start and up to three as it grows, give Mmopane butcheries a fresh local supplier instead of frozen chicken trucked from Gaborone, and keep money circulating in the village through buying wood shavings, charcoal and labour locally.
